Secretary Treasurer Candidate
Michael Sparks
I’m a proud Teamster and rank-and-file member running for Secretary-Treasurer of Local 399 because I believe it’s time to return our union to the membership — to the working men and women who built it, and who deserve strong, transparent, and accountable leadership.
I’ve spent my career working on productions across the country and around the world. From major studios to international locations, I’ve seen firsthand how other regions protect their film crews and fight for local jobs. That global experience gives me a unique perspective on how we can bring more work back to California and make our contracts stronger, smarter, and more secure.
California’s film industry is at a crossroads. We face runaway production, an unstable tax incentive system, and a lack of leadership willing to stand up and fight. I’m not a politician — I’m a worker like you. And I’m running to represent you— not the insiders, not the employers, and not the status quo.
Union History
I was born into both the entertainment industry and union values. My father was a stuntman and proud member of the Screen Actors Guild, while my grandfather served as a Teamster bus driver in Los Angeles. Raised in Santa Clarita, California, union pride and hard work were instilled in me from an early age.
At just twelve years old, I began operating heavy equipment during summers for my family’s business — mastering bulldozers, skip loaders, and backhoes. This hands-on experience became the foundation of my work ethic and problem-solving approach.
Thanks to the mentorship of the Curtis family at Curtis Sand & Gravel, I entered the Teamsters Training Fund and earned my Class A license. That led me to the Sack family at Hollywood Show Lights and Hollywood Fires, where I drove water trucks and tractor trailers — marking my first steps into the motion picture and television transportation business.
In 2000, I secured my 30 days on a union production and officially joined Teamsters Local 399. Over the next 25+ years, I built a career in nearly every role within transportation — from driver to leading full-scale operations alongside transportation coordinators and captains.
My specialized work involved setting up and managing private basecamps for high-profile talent, including overseeing trailers, mobile kitchens, gyms, makeup, wardrobe, security coordination, studio executive visits, and complex logistics — both domestically and abroad.
Through this global experience, I developed a rare combination of field expertise, logistical knowledge, and leadership — always working with pride, discretion, and professionalism.
Union Vision
As Secretary-Treasurer, I will:
Fight to fix California’s flawed film tax credit lottery system so that more work stays local.
Push for contracts that reflect the reality of our work and the value we bring to this industry.
Ensure full financial transparency and member-first decision-making.
Build real unity between departments, so every member — whether a driver, location professional, casting associate, or coordinator — has a voice that’s heard and respected.
I believe in a union that empowers its members, not silences them. One that defends its contracts, not just signs them. And one that leads with honesty, not fear.
This election is our chance to take our union back. I hope to earn your trust, your support, and your vote.
